The Tories are expected to announcement the toughest package of tax increases and governmental spending cuts in a generation, but where does this leave a lot of vulnerable women struggling to make ends meat in our consumerist world. The lure of the escort industry, strip clubs or even street prostitution could see more and more women being exploited due to their money needs.

 

According to Labour the spending cuts will push 900000 low earners out of the tax systems pushing up the unemployment figures and putting the economy in danger of going back into recession. For a lot of young women in the poorest areas they will be left with limited options to survive and entering the escort industry could potentially be an option for them.

 

The escort industry is seen as legitimate prostitute whereby a male or female pays for the companionship of another person and anything sexual happens is because both parties have consented rather than directly paying for the service i.e. you pay for their time. As the number of escort agencies and directories on the internet has increased 10 fold in the last 5 years, the barriers to women entering the industry are low. A girl can simple type into Google “Escorts Recruitment” and the area they want to work in and almost 100 pages of different agencies come up.

 

The ease of entry into the market and the general opinion that the escort industry doesn’

t succumb to recession will be two major factors in driving more women into the industry. After speaking to a Leeds escort who recently joined an escort agency called Professional Girlfriends, she said “I became an escort when I was on the verge of losing my house and I was in danger of going into serious debt. I called up Professional Girlfriends who offered me advice, ensured I knew what I was undertaking and also offered to meet up and discuss what being an escort meant. I felt I knew the risks before taking the position and I advice any girls considering going into the escort industry to use an escort agency. The agency provides a degree of protection as the booking all go through them, contact details and times are taken so people know where you are, they offer you plenty of advice and therefore I feel lower the risk of anything happening compared to working independently or on the street. I tend to get a lot of repeat business and meet in public places such as hotels. This way the client is leaving their details as a come back if anything happens. Overall I’m happy I entered the industry, my money troubles are all rectified and I’ve met some great people, however if anyone wants to come into this industry ensure it’s with an agency.

 

The owner of a leading escort directory said “From evidence within the industry there hasn’t been any significant increase in the amount of escorts but I expect the number to increase in the next year or so”

 

Overall there doesn’t appear to be any significant change but with the ease of entry to the market and less money in the economy there is no doubt that this will lead more women into the escort industry.
